The Week That Was: September 23-27

Birdies and Bikers and Business

You gotta love these weeks where all sorts of events happen in short order, in spots all across the state, involving all manner of MDA members. I’ll try to provide a concise summary based on the headline.

Birdies and golf took center stage at two events on Thursday. That morning in Jackson, Mo., the Southeast Dental Society had their fall golf tourney. After a short rain delay, the competition was pretty stiff, but Team Graybeard showed the young bucks that guile goes farther than strength. Congrats to Drs. Bob Fox, Pat Ruopp, Mark Milde and Ron Lessman (not pictured). And a special shout out to ‘Ace Milde’ for his hole-in-one. Good times all around!

Across the state that same Thursday evening, the Greater Kansas City Dental Society held a New Dentist Social at TopGolf. Stacey and Jerri from Team Travel were there to cheer on the swinging dentists and offer support and door prizes. I’m told that hilarity was abundant!

Speaking of New Dentist Socials, Shantel joined me in Cape Girardeau on Wednesday evening for the SEDS rendition of the event. It was held at Dogwood Social Club which had all manner of fun games and activities to offer. We punted on the MDA game board and chose to throw axes to decide who should win the prizes. Congrats to Drs. Harter and Schoolman for their expertise that led them to win the Yeti and Keurig.

On the Biker front, we head back to Cape for the SEDS Installation dinner theme. Doctors and staff embraced the costume challenge and more hilarity ensued. But business was conducted as well as MDA President, Dr. Dan Kessler, swore in new officers, Drs. Nathan Seyer (President) and Mack Taylor (President-elect). He also honored outgoing President, Dr. Jonathan Edwards with a plaque of appreciation. All three should be commended for their fashion sense. Dr. Harter also made a grand arrival on his bike and with his Easy Rider costume. But you did not have to dress up to attend as old friends like Drs. Lou Rohlfs, Bob Fox and Dan Kessler demonstrated.

Sticking to the more traditional business approach, the MDA Foundation Board met this morning and covered a wide array of business including passing the budget and determining nine grant awards to support local oral health outreach around the state. Watch upcoming communications for a more formal announcement. We also said goodbye to Dr. Bryan Foote who served the Foundation with excellence for two terms and is rotating off the board. MDAF Chair, Dr. Danielle Riordan, presented Dr. Foote with a plaque of appreciation.

Looking at the calendar I see that Shantel represented the MDA at the Missouri Coalition for Oral Health Board meeting today and tonight the Greater St. Louis Dental Society is hosting an event for SIU dental students. I would love to be there but my liver needs a break (just kidding … maybe).

MOMOM 8 Video Just Released

Every MOMOM clinic is different and we try to capture the uniqueness of each event in a video. It helps us preserve the story. Kudos to William Harrah at Celestial Pictures LLC for his fine work on this year’s video. You can watch it here.

The Week Ahead

Looks like more golf and a visit to Macon for the Northeast Dental Society business meeting and New Dentist Social. Plus the September/October issue of the Focus mails Monday, so be on the lookout.
