The Week That Was: April 12-16

Gathering Again to Celebrate in St. Louis

Only recently have restrictions eased enough and vaccinations increased enough for people to feel safe about gathering again. Being together is like its own vaccine – a shot in the arm and a boost to the spirits. All this was on display last Sunday at the GSLDS installation event. MDA President, Dr. Rob Tait and wife, Faye, plus MDA ED, Vicki Wilbers, and husband, Tooter, were there to celebrate with many local members. It was quite a festive and busy evening. On the business side, Dr. Tait swore in the new officers President, Dr. Danielle Riordan, President-elect, Dr. Robyn Hayes, 1st VP, Dr. Megan Lenahan, 2nd VP, Dr. Andrew Bruening, and Treasurer, Dr. Michael Hoffmann. Also outgoing President, Dr. Mark Scantlan received his plaque and key for service. A nice touch in the evening was having Dr. Mark Zust emcee the event where his daughter, Dr. Riordan would be recognized. Family tradition is rich in the MDA.

Dr. Tom Flavin presented the Give Kids a Smile Hero Award to Mary Signorino, RDH. GSLDS then presented special awards including a Gold Medal Award to Dr. William Seaton in recognition of his career service to dentistry. Dr. Emily Hahn received the Award of Merit for her leadership and outstanding service to the profession and community. The Humanitarian Award went to Dr. Jacqueline Miller for having brought honor to the profession and for selfless commitment to humanity without regard to personal gain. For their many hours and selfless contribution during the challenging year of 2020, the executive committee of the board, Drs. Riordan, Hayes, Lenahan and Hoffman, received the Distinguished Service Award. And in special recognition for exceptional commitment and service in 2020, the GSLDS Office staff of Meg Stagina, Laura Breeden, Nikki Sprehe and Susan Prosperi received the Outstanding Service Award.

All this makes me proud of our members and staff for their resilient efforts over the past 15 months. It is very much a team effort when the MDA and local components thrive. I salute all the winners for their just recognition. Looking through all the photos, I can’t help but think the smiles all appear a little more grateful. It’s good to be together again.

More Component Gatherings on the Horizon

Last week CDS also met via Zoom. NEDS gathered in Kirksville, and I got a good report from Dr. Amanda Fitzpatrick, NEDS trustee and Dr. Lisa Bosch, New Dentist rep on the MDA board. This coming week I know our Legislative Liaison, Olivia Wilson, will join by Zoom to speak with the NWDS. And in the last week of April I will get to join the fine folks in Springfield for their installation event while Vicki and Dr. Tait attend the SWDS. Plus the MDA Board will have a hybrid event for their board meeting at the end of the month. Look for more pictures and updates as members once again gather together in person.

Just like spring, activity is budding everywhere. Connect4Success registration has already passed the 75 mark and hotel and vendor space is filling fast. Connect4Cash tickets are going like hot cakes with 57 sold. The New Dentist Committee met this week via Zoom and covered a lot of ground while welcoming new members, Dr. Sable Muntean and Dr. Chris Koechner. Starting yesterday the Midwest Dental Conference is going on virtually. Add to this legislative progress and more and you have a lot to keep up with so use your MDA App and read your eNews.
