The Week That Was: June 28-July 2

It’s a holiday weekend. Let’s celebrate with a theme of the ultimate ooh and aahs—fireworks!

Membership Fireworks

Being part of a tripartite has many advantages. The MDA works with the local components and the ADA on a variety of membership initiatives. We share best practices and cheer on each other as we all are in this together. This week we had a special Zoom session to celebrate victories and pass out awards after a difficult 2020. You can check out the Sketch Art detailing the event and you can cheer with us as naturally the MDA was in the limelight. We were acknowledged for the following. Yep, we love our dental students.

  • National Signing Day – Class of 2020 80% or greater of applications signed
    • Missouri: Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health
    • Missouri: University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry

UMKC Fireworks

Just yesterday we learned the news of Dr. Steven Haas being named the dean of the UMKC SOD. I’m sure our many UMKC alumni members are interested to meet and welcome Dr. Haas to Missouri. You can read the press release here.

Love Fireworks in the MDA Family

We’re a close staff family here at the MDA and are thrilled to celebrate a big wedding tomorrow. Ryan Wilbers, son of MDA Executive Director, Vicki Wilbers, will take Jayme Baumgartner as his bride. They are both delightful young people with a great future and Vicki and Tooter are besides themselves with joy. There’s been a lot of buzz around the office, and we are excited to raise a toast to the happy couple. All the best to them!

National Fireworks

Regardless of many current social ills, this still is a great country with many freedoms worth celebrating. After a bad stretch of recent weather, it looks like a glorious weekend for friends and family to gather and enjoy our freedom. Be safe and have fun as you celebrate birthday #245 for the USA! (The MDA office will be closed on Monday, July 5, in honor of the holiday).

The Week Ahead

As mentioned, we love our dental students, and it’s time to celebrate them as well. Next Tuesday Stacey Hemmel and Jerri Wildhaber will be in Kirksville for the D1 Informational Fair at MOSDOH. Later that week the students will watch this welcome video and be invited to a reception hosted by the Northeast Dental Society on July 22. Then on Friday of next week, MDA President, Dr. Rob Tait, will participate in the MOSDOH White Coat Ceremony for the class of 2025.

Also on the travel schedule is my visit to Mountain View to retrieve some MOMOM supplies. Cancelling our scheduled extraction clinic for a second year due to COVID concerns was a tough choice in January, but with increased hospitalizations and confirmed cases of the Delta Variant in Howell County, this decision was the wise one. Hopefully one day we still can make this happen and support the great efforts of the Good Samaritan Care Clinic.

Quotes of the Week

“Those who won our independence believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the secret of liberty.” — Louis Brandeis

“To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.” — David Viscott
