The Week That Was: November 14-18

Well Being Board Learns of National Resources

On Wednesday evening, MDA’s Dental Well Being Foundation board held its annual Zoom meeting to handle business like electing officers, passing the 2023 budget, and hearing reports from various people. We were fortunate to have Missouri’s own, Dr. Amanda Fitzpatrick from La Plata, join us briefly. Dr. Fitzpatrick serves on the ADA’s Council for Dental Practice (CDP). As such, she learns about the many things ADA does for members that often goes unseen or doesn’t make splashy headlines. This includes discovering the many resources that ADA provides on the well being front with everything from ergonomics to a new initiative called the Wellness Ambassador Program. The idea is to train interested members to be a ready lifeline of compassion and encouragement for peers who are burdened with mental and emotional health concerns. You can read more about this program and the very first class of ambassadors here. I would love to see some Missouri dentists become ambassadors to help our members find helpful information like our own Voluntary Wellness Program. Better health for all is a goal we all embrace.

Jimmy, Teddy and Pink – Part 2

Devoted readers of this blog (are there any?) will remember that last week I shared about the Food for Thought program at UMKC. Well, it went over so well, we did it again this week at MOSDOH in Kirksville. Once again the generous of spirit, Dr. Teddy Rogers, joined us to share her dental journey so far using a P!nk video as inspiration. The students soaked it in while eating Jimmy John box lunches and awaiting their chance at cash and prizes. Dr. Rogers got the added bonus of riding along with me, Stacey  Hemmel and Jerri Wildhaber, our MDIS sponsor. There’s nothing like a car ride for staff and members to get to know each other at a deeper level. I recommend it.

ASDA and Advocacy

I love when dental students show interest in advocacy efforts. They realize what happens today affect the way they practice in the future. Recently some ASDA leaders at UMKC approached us about providing some content at a lunch and learn. Thankfully we have stellar resources and great volunteers here at the MDA. On Friday, the team of Dr. Guy Deyton, former state dental director; Dr. Aaron Bumann, pediatric dentist and enthusiastic volunteer; and Ms. Olivia Wilson, MDA’s awesome lobbyist, appeared in a panel format to discuss Medicaid issues. It’s great for students to hear the ins and outs and learn how much MDA does to promote a system that serves both patient and provider well. I salute our panelists and thank them for their time and commitment to the next wave of providers.

The Week Ahead

It’s a short one due to some early travel for the holiday and the office being closed to celebrate Thanksgiving. We’ll post again on December 2.
