The Week That Was: February 8-12

Super Saturday > Super Sunday

While the results from Super Bowl LV were disappointing to Missourians — especially those in Kansas City — there were some very positive results for dentists in the Kansas City area last Saturday. Thanks to a well-coordinated effort led by Dr. Guy Deyton with assistance from Dr. Zachary Brown, Dr. Erica Ketchem, Dr. Bill Duensing, Dr. Wendy Weimer and GKCDS ED, Sam Silvey, they were able to vaccinate about 250 dentists and staff members as part of a larger event where 832 total people received their first vaccine dose. The event was a collaborative effort between Greater Kansas City Dental Society, UMKC School of Pharmacy, Medical Relief Corps of Kansas City (MRC) and the City of Kansas City. The MDA has been working alongside components to help create awareness of local events like these so members and their dental teams can get vaccinated. Continue to monitor modental.org/covid for the latest updates.

It Pays to Advocate

As you know, the 2021 Legislative Session is in full swing and so are the MDA advocacy efforts. After a successful Virtual Town Hall on January 26, we encouraged attendees to follow up directly with their elected officials by using the super simple VoterVoice tool. This resource allows us to alert members about timely actions they can take with their representatives. For example, once we knew that COVID Liability was being debated on the Senate floor, we sent a VoterVoice alert to members and several responded by sending a reminder to their official about the MDA’s position on the issue. It is highly effective to have your voice heard in this way. There is no mistaking our level of engagement on issues important to members. This engagement from you along with the daily work of our team at the Capitol makes a big difference in our overall success. And to drive this point home, we had a contest for all those who both attended the Town Hall and used VoterVoice the next week. Our grand prize was a custom MDA/MDIS Yeti backpack cooler valued at $300. Congrats to our winner, Dr. Morgan Emery and thanks to all who participated.

PAC 300 Call Goes Out

A well-funded PAC is another basic element to a strong advocacy effort. Officials remember who supports them. After donating more than $75,000 in the last election cycle with great success, it was time to replenish the MODentPAC balance so we could fight issues like downcoding. Last week a letter was mailed to about 1,500 members who have not donated to PAC in the last three years. We are asking them to consider being one of 300 members who give $100 to help us raise $30,000 by the end of April. If you missed the letter or need an easy short cut to participate, click here.

Warm Hearts > Cold Hearts

If dealing with a pandemic wasn’t difficult enough, a big blast of cold and dangerous winter weather has dominated our last week and half. No school, slick roads and frigid temps do not make daily life and practice any easier. My thought is to give a single digit to Mother Nature when we get single digit temperatures. On the plus side Valentine’s Day is Sunday so be sure to pause and be thankful for the love in your life. Love conquers (and thaws) all!

The Week Ahead

The MDA office will be closed Monday in honor of President’s Day. When we return we have a top-notch MDA Virtual CE series on Tuesday, February 16 entitled Quarterbacking Difficult Restorative Cases in Tumultuous Financial Times presented by Dr. Marc Geissberger. It’s not too late to register here. Also our dental student outreach resumes next week with a virtual Food for Thought on Wednesday evening featuring Dr. Ricardo Lemus as our speaker. Plenty more of the usual work awaits as well.

Quote of the Week

Noses are red, fingers are blue. I’m tired of winter, how about you?
