The Week That Was: December 14-18

Vaccine Launch is Early Gift for All

You’ve all seen the media coverage, but the upbeat story bears repeating in such a difficult year—there’s finally a vaccine in the fight against COVID-19. While frontline workers and those high-risk are the first in line to receive a vaccination, dentists and team members will follow shortly. Naturally a project this broad in scope and this novel in nature generates a lot of questions. Fortunately MDA members were able to jump on a  Zoom with DHSS Director, Dr. Randall Williams, to learn more about the distribution plan in Missouri and to ask questions—of which their was no shortage. It seems one of the best ways dentists can get the shot is by coordinating with local physicians and perhaps setting up a time to have an entire office vaccinated at once. The office was buzzing with follow-up calls and activities as each unique area of the state tries to figure out the best approach and timing. This is not the space for a full treatment of the subject. I merely wanted to shine the light on some positive news during a dreadful year. For solid information, you can visit the state of Missouri vaccine page or read the ADA fact page.

New Dentists Jingle and Mingle over Zoom at Holiday Party

Given the restrictions on local gatherings, designated outreach funds were used for prizes at the first-ever virtual holiday party for New Dentists in the non-metro areas of the state. Almost all of the 16 of the NDs on the Zoom Party Tuesday night participated in the hat contest. Competition was intense and it took a run-off vote before we crowned Dr. Lisa Bosch (NEDS) as winner for her “Hanging with her Gnomies” hat. She earned $150 for the win. Dr. Ashley Meyer (GSDS) took second place and $75 for her “Golden Reindeer” hat. The playful competition raged on during 10 rounds of Christmas song trivia and a virtual scavenger hunt that had dentists flying around their homes in search of items like a spatula or cleaning product. And because Santa loves to be generous, we spun the now ubiquitous “Wheel of Names” to pass out event more prizes. Everyone won something and some light-hearted banter made for a fun hour. And so while we prefer to be together, this was not a bad substitute for some needed mirth.

Missouri Dental Board Appointees Announced

The Missouri Dental Board is a very active member of the dental community with oversite of license renewal, certain regulatory issues and public complaints among other items. Serving on the board is both an honor and a stout time commitment and responsibility. This past week Governor Parson announced three new appointees to the board. Congrats to Dr. Virginia Mennemeyer  who is an orthodontist in Troy. Dr. Jennifer Williams Tinnel is an owner of Tiffany Springs Dental Group, a dental practice supported by Pacific Dental Services. Stacie Scrivner, RDH, from Mount Vernon has experience in the education field. All candidates must be approved by the Senate next month.

No Blog Next Week

Next Friday is Christmas Day and who wants to publish a blog (or read one!) on Christmas Day? Instead let’s all enjoy our families, however that might look in 2020, and be thankful for higher pursuits and grander comfort. May your holidays be full of light, hope and peace. All of us here at the MDA wish you the merriest!
