Dental Students Dig Food for Thought
We hosted a second virtual Food for Thought this past Wednesday as part of our “MDA at Night” outreach to dental students across the state. We had 130 participants listening to two recent grads from ATSU MOSDOH. Dr. Lisa Bosch shared about her rural practice in northeast Missouri and Dr. Richard Campos shared his perspective and passion for working in public health. Both doctors were active as students, and it’s awesome to see them so involved now as they give back and set a great example. Our partner, MDIS, sponsors FFT and makes all the fun possible by supplying the cash, prizes and t-shirts that we give away. Congrats to the following winners: Ashi Patel, Charlie Boehm, Cole Johnson, Cory Hansen, Jay Bhakta, Cassidy Garling, Jody Pfeuffer, Mikayla Stevens, Samantha Mahaffey and Sydney Zuraski. Getting your name bolded in this blog is just icing on the cake!
Our fall outreach wraps up on December 9 when we host a virtual awards night and announce the winner of the video contest, plus the grand prize winner of the Yeti cooler. I love the energy of the students and applaud them for tackling dental school during a pandemic.
PAC Committee Annual Meeting
The MDA MODentPAC Committee consists of representatives from every component. Its main focus is to raise and distribute member donations to enhance our advocacy efforts. This year they supported 75 candidates in the general election and all but one was victorious. It’s not soon forgotten when leadership at the Capitol requests support for a candidate and we are able to respond. This is possible through your generous donations via dues or with special fundraisers like last week’s virtual effort that netted $9,225. Thank you! It really makes a difference to MDA’s strong advocacy position. At the annual MODentPAC meeting this past Tuesday, the committee cleaned up some bylaws issues, reviewed election results and discussed strategic efforts to engage more members with PAC. Currently 19% of membership supports the PAC. Imagine how much stronger we can be with more participation!
The Week Ahead
Our MDA Virtual series continues next Tuesday, November 17 with a panel discussion involving ADA experts on current COVID-related issues. Register here to join us. I also see where Greater Kansas City Dental Society is hosting a virtual BINGO outreach for its new dentists. I applaud this creative approach to stay engaged. Otherwise, I know a lot of discussion will center around what our legislative day activities look like in a virtual world.
