The Week That Was: January 13-17

Behold the Power of the Brush

As dentists, you all know what a powerful tool the simple toothbrush is for good oral health when used regularly. This week we learned what a powerful tool it is for good advocacy for the profession. Yesterday, Vicki, Shantel and I hit the Capitol to distribute a simple brush/floss/paste kit to every elected official. Providing this simple gift is a great door opener as we meet the legislative aides and elected officials who need to know faces from the MDA and need to understand what’s important to our members. It was also a great way to remind them of our Legislative Reception and Day on January 28/29. It was fun to see the smiles of people who look forward to this practical gift each year. It was also fun to have some interesting impromptu conversations with folks like Representative Dave Griffith who is from Shantel’s home district. And it’s all inexpensive and reported to the General Assembly so it’s compliant with ethics rules.

Inside the Halls

The blog is easier to write when we have travels or special events to report on but the truth is the MDA work often goes on quietly and steadily here without much fanfare. Looking at the calendar this past week, I see ordinary things. I see a staff meeting. I see Melissa and Elisha working to get the Focus to print. I see Vicki conducting annual reviews with the team and attending an MDIS staff meeting. I see Shantel at various Capitol events. I see tons more with dues, EFDA, Foundation activities and prep for upcoming events. The purr of productivity is often overlooked but fear not, it’s happening.

What do Ice and Martin Luther King Jr have in common?

The unpredictable winter weather is one reason we moved our annual CE conference from January to June. It’s also the reason that office schedules get jumbled. Due to icy weather, the MDA office is closed today but staff is on alert to work from home and respond to emails. On Monday, we’re closed again in honor of the Martin Luther King holiday.

The Week Ahead

Short but powerful is the forecast as we steam toward Legislative Day the following week. We are vetting a possible leadership speaker for a track at Connect4Success. There’s a Missouri Dental Board meeting on Friday. The Greater St. Louis Dental Society Installation Banquet is next Saturday.

Quote of the Week (to be repeated often and loudly) …
