Farewell to a Father
We frequently comment on the family aspect of the MDA. Often families help each other through sad times. This was the case last week for MDA Executive Director, Vicki Wilbers, whose father passed away the day before Thanksgiving. Vicki’s own large family grieved together but her MDA family—the staff, the Board and many members— were quick to show support, as well. Don lived a full and long life and passed peacefully but losing a parent is always difficult. We continue to wish the Wilbers/Bernskoetter families peace in this time of sorrow. Vicki has said many times how helpful the kind words and gestures from her MDA family have been.
A Warm Welcome
Families also warmly welcome new folks into their midst. The MDA/MDIS family is happy to welcome Whitney Whitson into the fold as the new office coordinator at MDIS. She just started Monday, but I’m sure Jerri will have her up and going in no time at all. Whitney comes to us from a law office and lives in Linn, Mo. She will be a great addition to the future plans of MDIS. Be sure to give her a warm welcome when you call the MDIS office.
It Pays to Pay and Play
It’s dues season at the MDA. That means you get a chance to make an excellent choice and begin or renew your membership in the MDA and start to enjoy all the benefits and advantages of having a healthy association and profession. Because we know you love to win prizes, we held an early bird contest for those who paid their dues online before the 11/27 deadline or chose the auto renew option. Well, more than 300 of you smarties entered and earlier this week we drew the winners on Facebook Live. We were so excited that we even drew a bonus name. Congrats to our 4 winners – Dr. Ed Kendrick, Independence; Dr. Eric Hosler, St. Louis; Dr. Michael Grasso, Chesterfield; and, Dr. Diane Vasquez, High Ridge. You may have missed out on the early bird contest, but you still can get your dues paid by the January 1 deadline. See modental.org/dues for information or call the MDA; we’re happy to answer questions or take your dues payment over the phone.
Well, it’s not exactly like the popular Marco Polo pool game, but this week Shantel Smith, MDA Legislative Director, joins Vicki in Marco Island, Fla. for the ADA Lobby Conference. This annual event is a strategy session for all the states as they prepare for legislative sessions at both the local and national level. This year, the MDA will have some additional ADA state public affairs grant dollars to help us represent your needs and protect your profession before Missouri lawmakers and leaders. However, it’s not up to just these folks. Advocacy is everyone’s job, and a big part of that is strong showings in financial support of candidates (please give to MODentPAC) and at the Capitol to share your needs directly with elected officials (please RSVP for MDA’s Lobby Day).
The Week Ahead
It’s pretty quiet on the MDA front as we process dues and finish up year-end business before launching another fabulous year in 2020. However, I will join Shantel, Jerri and Lindsey as we travel to join the festive New Dentists in St. Louis for their holiday social and fierce Ugly Sweater contest. Also, Vicki and MDA President, Dr. Mike Berry, will travel to Kansas City for their holiday social and officer installation event. We’ll have full reports and pictures! Tis the season!
