The Week That Was at the MDA

Editor’s Note:  As the author of this blog, I apologize for my recent weak performance. For 2017, my new goal is to post a summary of miscellaneous activities from the week at the end of every week. It will be my inside scoop on the news with a social twist. Start to follow along and send me your feedback. Thanks to my loyal readers if there are any!

Falsepocalypse Retrospective

Last week, the buzz was all about the approaching Ice-ageddon and how it would affect the Winter Session. The MDA took it seriously, but plowed ahead. I took it seriously and adjusted personal travel plans and bought enough ice melt to last a lifetime. We braced for the worse, but the worse never materialized in Columbia. I know that’s not the case for others–especially along the I-44 corridor. We all did the best we could, given the information we had and our own, personal risk tolerance. We thank all those who did attend, speak and exhibit at the final MDA Winter Session. It was memorable! I feel fairly sure ice won’t be a problem when we relaunch this event in June 2018 alongside the New Dentists Connect 4 Success Conference.

Suite Life Raffle off to a Sweet Start

One positive report from the Winter Session is the high interest in the winter raffle benefiting the MDA Foundations. We are a third of the way toward our $5,000 goal. Anyone can enter to win from now until February 28. The prize is a private suite with food and drink at a 2017 St. Louis Cardinal game of your choosing. The value is $2,500! The tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100. Find out more and buy you tickets online here.

THE OFFICE

With the MLK holiday, it was a short, but busy week at the MDA. The Finance Committees of the MDA and the MDA Foundation participated in a webinar this past Wednesday evening. Mr. Jeff Boessen from Central Bank Investments gave a solid report on the performance and strategy behind our investment choices. If I understood it as an English major then you know it was good. You should be proud of the strong financial footing of this association and the wise use of your dues.

Yesterday, the finishing touches were put on the Focus magazine and it headed to the printers, to arrive in your mailbox by February 1. In this issue, we feature winners of the Fifth Annual Photo Contest. Because I treat my readers well, you can view the winners and other entries now in this short video.

Last night, Katie Reichard, MDA Legislative and Regulatory Director, hosted a webinar briefing to prepare attendees for the MDA Legislative Day next week Wednesday. There’s still time to make plans to come. Just get in touch with Katie.

Later today the rescheduled meeting of the Well Being Committee of the Missouri Dental Board will meet here at the office. This committee is made up of MDA appointee Dr. J.C. Standlee; MDB representative Dr. William Kane; MDHA representative Karen Reiner, RDH; and, Well Being Program Administrator Rebecca Mowen. Their purpose is to advise the Dental Board on sensitive cases involving substance abuse.

On a funny note, a staff member, who shall remain anonymous, overcooked an egg in the break room microwave, blew the door open and created quite a mess! We collectively chortled over this mishap. See the photo evidence below.

THE ROAD

The rental car will make Joplin a frequent destination over the next few months as I work with Drs. Mike Laferla and Rob Renger and the local team to prepare for MOMOM 6. Yesterday I met with funders from the Joplin CVB. They are excited to welcome our volunteers. I also met with MSSU food services as we start to hammer out a food plan. Finally we had a lively meeting on campus, as we ramp up plans. Our theme this year is to “join the lionhearted” volunteers who make MOMOM a reality. I took a picture of a prominent lion on the MSSU campus to give you inspiration.

NEXT WEEK

It’s a big week for the MDA. We have our legislative reception on Tuesday evening. Our 2017 MDA Legislative Day is Wednesday January 25. This will be the first legislative day with Governor Grietens in office. Find out more about these important events here. There is also a telehealth summit that Vicki and Katie will attend on Thursday. And I have the pleasure of speaking to the Jefferson City Study Club on Thursday evening.

THIS WEEK’S QUOTE/THOUGHT
