The Week That Was: January 9-13

The Week That Was at the MDA

Editor’s Note:  As the author of this blog, I apologize for my recent weak performance. For 2017, my new goal is to post a summary of miscellaneous activities from the week at the end of every week. It will be my inside scoop on the news with a social twist. Start to follow along and send me your feedback. Thanks to my loyal readers if there are any!

A Gathering Storm

Last Sunday while watching football, my wife casually commented on a Facebook post that said it was unusual for all weather predicting models to align with a singular message: massive ice storm next weekend! In my opinion ice is the worst type of storm. Driving is a nightmare. Power outages are more likely. And you can’t play in it. I went to work Monday and felt like Chicken Little when I reported my concerns to Vicki. Wisely she reminded me the weather is always changing and plans will stay in place for scheduled events. But an uneasy figurative cloud started to appear on the horizon. This entry will post before all is said and done so stay tuned next week for “As the Weather Turns”.

Regardless of the weather, take heart that as a dentist you have the #1 ranked job in America. So proud of you!

With two big events this week, we looked to Margie Kunze to get us all set for board meeting and to Mandy Lewis to direct our steps for the Winter Session this weekend. Both excel in their roles. I can hear the printer quite well from my office, and it’s been humming all week.

The MDA Board met on January 12 and we had full attendance. Agenda items included teledentistry committee report, legislative agenda, status of the UMKC satellite campus in Joplin and much more. Did you know members can read minutes from the MDA Board meetings at this members-only link? Stay informed and see what your leaders are discussing.

The premier travel event this week is the MDA’s Winter Session … if travel is possible. A strong line up may be weakened by the storm. It’s too early to measure the impact. This is sad because 2017 was the last year for the Winter Session in Columbia and we wanted to end on a high note. Our members and sponsors have made this a great event for more than 20 years running. The MDA Board decided (in part because of the risk of foul weather) to explore moving this event to the Lake of the Ozarks in the summer in combination with the Connect 4 Success New Dentist Conference. This has advantages on many levels, so look for our grand unveiling in the summer of 2018.

The MDA is closed on Monday, January 16 in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and to recoup from the meeting weekend. On Thursday, January 19, I’ll be on the road to Joplin to launch the 20-week countdown to MOMOM with the local team. On Friday, January 20, the Missouri Dental Board meets. You can visit their site to see meeting agenda items.

From the Doors …

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan.
Riders on the storm

Trust me, for those of a certain age, this song is now stuck in your head.
